Gaslight – Apr 5-7, 2024

The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts will be reviving its hit production of Gaslight, by Patrick Hamilton, first staged as the WCPA’s “Halloween show” in October, 2023, and bringing it to the Rialto Theater in Florence.

Gaslight, a “domestic thriller” set in 1880’s London, debuted on the London stage in 1938. It came to Broadway in 1941 (as Angel Street), starring Vincent Price in the role of suave villain Jack Manningham who is, for reasons of his own, trying to drive his wife insane. She, with the help of a bluff police detective named Rough, must face up to Manningham’s efforts and thwart them before they succeed. Gaslight proved to be a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and inspired two movies of the same name, the more famous being the 1942 Hollywood version starring Ingrid Bergman.

The Gaslight revival production at the Rialto is scheduled for the weekend of April 5-7, 2024. It is directed by Elliot Jackson, who was the co-director for the WCPA’s summer 2023 production of “Measure for Measure”, which also came to the Rialto Theater. Jackson also plays the role of Inspector Rough. McKenzie Huffman and Rebekah McCabe, both of whom were also featured in Measure for Measure, star as Jack and Bella Manningham. The production also features veteran actor Bev Allen and up-and-comer Mattie Ballard as the Manningham servants, Elizabeth and Nancy.
